There is a proverb ‘Sleep is the best medicine.’ in Korea. It describes the importance of sleep; likewise, most people sleep at night and work during the day. However, some people cannot fall asleep during night because of insomnia. Insomnia is a disease in which you cannot sleep for more than two weeks in an appropriate environment. The patients have a hard time falling asleep, getting up frequently at night, or sleeping at dawn. More people suffer from insomnia than expected. Insomnia is caused by a variety of factors and has a direct negative effect on the body's health. Therefore, it is important to know exactly the causes and consequences of insomnia. There are several causes and effects of insomnia.
A first cause of sleeplessness is bad habits in lifestyle. If the daily life pattern changes, it can be a factor to disturb sleep. In addition, sleep disorders is caused by smoking, drinking alcohol, and caffeine drink too much. For instance, you can not sleep well if you drink alcohol before bedtime. Drinking only can help you fall asleep, but it interferes with high-quality deep sleep. This is because acetaldehyde, which is caused by alcohol decomposition in the body, stimulates the cerebral cortex and prevents you from taking a rest (식품의약품안전처 “아세트알데히드”). This substance is fatal to the skin, such as swelling the mucous membrane and narrowing the airway too. It is more harmful for person who snores to suffer from sleep disorder (Shin “잠, 안 오면 자지 마라”). Interestingly, a person often taking sleeping pills experiences a sleep disorder when he/she takes them more than a month.
The second cause may be psychological factors. Not only stress but also nervousness is serious elements that influences on sleeping. Insomnia is mentioned as one of the typical symptoms of depression. Therefore, if a person is depressed or under a lot of mental stress, the person cannot sleep easily. For example, you easily suffer from insomnia due to stress, environmental changes, worries about family, or occupational problems.
In addition to life habit and psychological factors, the environment factor is one of the cause. If the sleeping environment is not well created, you cannot fall asleep easily. Noise such as the sound of a car, an airplane passing by, and a neighbor's television also interferes with sleep. Even if the room is too bright or the temperature of the room is not appropriate, person is afflicted from sleep disorder (서울아산병원 “insomnia”). The body secretes melatonin so that we can get a full sleep. The darker this melatonin is, the more active it moves. Thus, bright lighting is also a problem with the chemical reaction in the body like the secretion of melatonin.
People tried really hard to sleep with much effort, but they are disturbed by various factors. Because of it, people bear not only insomnia bout also other hardships.
The first result of insomnia is a psychological problem. Not being able to sleep provides people with constant fatigue. It is less efficient to do work and study. Drinking additional coffee to study and work can cause insomnia again and continue the vicious cycle.
Insomnia also affects physical health. This is because if a person does not sleep well, it is impossible to maintain the metabolism of the human body, maintain major organ functions, and relieve stress (국민건강보험 “잠 못 드는 당신을 위한 조언”). Therefore, there are veral diseases like chronic headaches, menstrual pain, constipation, and indigestion because of sleeplessness. Moreover, there is a growth disorder that occurs due to poor sleep. The growth hormones are mainly secreted at night, especially in deep sleep. Thus, it is recommended to sleep between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. and sleep regularly (두산백과 “성장호르몬”). Insomnia is a disease that interferes with regular sleep in humans, so it can also prevent growth.
Insomnia is a disease that appears in connection with modern people's bad lifestyle and psychological problems, or unsuitable environment for sleep. If you cannot sleep properly, you are tired and uncomfortable in carrying out your daily life. The human body goes through a process of rest and reorganization while a person is sleeping, and if not sleeping, it also adversely affects the body, causing other diseases.
